Summary for twelve week course in animal
grooming. This is independent study, therefore,
each Student may enroll on the next available Monday of
each month. Each student must attend 480 hours of
training to graduate. 90% of training is hands on
lab work, the remaining time is theory. The purpose
of the training is to supply skilled groomers to fill the
many job opportunities available.
Week #1
DGE110 Grooming Equipment 3
Hours
Introduction to equipment.
Personalize your equipment with your initials and develop
a routine to care for grooming tools properly for the
most efficient use and longevity. Define and
identify blades and prioritize their uses.
Recognize guards and justify their purpose. Learn the
proper handling and care of your clippers and be able to
identify symptoms of problems and know how to repair your
clippers and extend their life and efficiency.
Recognize uses for brushes, combs, rake and mat
splitter. This course teaches the Student to
identify different shampoos, dips, rinses, oils and
reason and use for each product. Describe mixing
products and understand the concerns and implications of
improper use.
DGL 110 Grooming Lab 36 Hours
This course describes roughing and
preliminary preparation before bathing.
Introduction to proper bathing and drying expressing anal
glands and correct application of flea and tick
dips. Roughing of dogs will include shaving of pads
and sanitary area, clipping nails and use of quick stop,
cleaning ears and use of ear powder and forceps. Correct
brushing techniques to avoid brush burns.
Dematting of animals in a humane manner to prevent
painful memories of the visit to the groomer.
Recognize different ways of drying dogs, i.e. fluff
drying, blow drying and cage drying.
DPSY Pet Psychology 1 Hour
Learn how to create a safe environment
and positive relationship between you and the animal you
are grooming.
Week #2
DGB 110 Dog Grooming Biology 3
Hours
This course includes basic dog anatomy,
skeletal system and exterior conformation points which
aid in understanding proper grooming and
instructions. Nervous system cover different types
of seizures a pet can have while under your care, and how
to distinguish one from another. We will orientate the
student with the methods he or she can use to comfort the
dog during a seizure.
DGL 120 Lab 36 Hours
Reinforce proper roughing, brushing and
dematting. Learn to strip matted dogs, and what
blades to use when stripping without injuring an
animal. Begin preliminary scissoring.
DPSY 120 Dog Psychology 1 hour
It is imperative to learn how to
recognize a potentially dangerous animal and when a
muzzle is required.
Week #3
DGB 120 Biology 3 hours
This course will cover basic respiratory
complications including possible kennel cough
recognition, a collapsed trachea and breathing problems
caused from allergies. Instructor will outline
heart worm diseases and complications that can
develop. You must be able to recognize ear
problems.
DGL 130 Lab 36 hours
This course will cover the grooming
patterns on the Cocker Spaniel and why some pet Cockers
are groomed differently than others. Lhasa Apso and
Shih Tzu grooming will be introduced.
DPSY 130 Dog Psychology 1 Hour
You will be introduced to commands used
to communicate with a dog you will be grooming so that he
will understand your expectations.
Week #4
DGB 130 Biology 3 Hours
This section will cover recognition of
common skin problems that occur. Introduction to the
products that may help alleviate skin problems or
recommend professional Veterinary assistance. We
will cover the dangers of over infestation of fleas,
ticks, mites, and common parasites.
DGL 140 Lab 36 Hours
This week will cover the Miniature
Schnauzer, clipping poodle feet and face, Blending by
skimming and thinning will be demonstrated by the
instructor. Review Cocker Spaniel, Lhasa Apso and
Shih Tzu grooming. Guard usage will be introduced.
DPSY 140 Dog Psychology 1 Hour
You will learn how to introduce a new
puppy to grooming.
Week #5
DBR 110 Breed Recognition 3

You will be introduced to the different
breeds listed under the Toy Group in your AKC Dog Book.
DGL 150 Lab 36 Hours
Patterns for the Poodle and Teddy Bear
Clips will be covered. Review of all previous
grooming.
DPSY 150 Dog Psychology 1 Hour
We explain how you would determine if it
would be unsafe for you or the animal to continue it's
grooming.
Week #6
DBR 120 Breed Recognition 3
Hours
You will be introduced to the different
breeds listed under the Sporting Group in your AKC Dog
Book.
DGL 160 Lab 36 Hours
Grooming on Springer Spaniels and Setters
will be demonstrated. Correct blending and thinning
techniques will be shown. Review of previous
grooming.
DPSY 160 Dog Psychology 1 Hour
Why owners must always be told when an
inadvertent accident happens while grooming their
pet. How to tell the owner, tactfully, that their
pet was injured while being groomed.
Week #7
DBR 130 Breed Recognition 3
Hours
You will be introduced to the different
breeds listed under the Terrier Group in your AKC Dog
Book.
DGL 170 Lab 36 Hours
Demonstration of correct patterns to be
used on the Airedale Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier, Scottish
Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier, and
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Hand Stripping will be
demonstrated. Review previous grooming.
DPSY 170 Dog Psychology 1 Hour
How to deal with unruly animals in a safe
manner, not letting the dog intimidate you.
Week #8
DBR 140 Breed Recognition 3
Hours
You will be introduced to the breeds
listed under the Working Group in you AKC Dog Book.
DGL 180 Lab 36 Hours
Correct grooming of the Welsh Terrier and
the Kerry Blue Terrier will be demonstrated.
GCR 110 Groomer - Client
Relations 1 Hour
Reasons why you would inform a client
their dog is too matted to be brushed out and must be
stripped. Show courtesy to customer and demonstrate
the proper way to brush their pet to keep it in excellent
condition. Distinguish when you have a right to
refuse to groom a dog.
Week #9
DBR 150 Breed Recognition 1
Hour
You will be introduced to the breeds
listed under the Herding Group in your AKC Dog Book.
DGL 190 Lab 36 Hours
You will learn how to groom the head of
the Bouvier Des Flandres. Review previous grooming.
GCR 120 Client Relations 1 Hour
You will learn how to interpret a
client's grooming instructions and how and when to
suggest the appropriate type of groom for their breed of
dog.
Week #10
DBR 160 Breed Recognition 3
Hours
You will be introduced to the breeds
listed under the Non Sporting Group in your AKC Dog Book.
DGL 200 Lab 36 Hours
Grooming of Chow Chows and Bichon
Frise. Correct brushing and trimming the Chow Chow
will be taught including Lion Clips. The proper
scissor pattern for the Bichon Frise will be
demonstrated. Review previous grooming.
GCR 130 Client Relations 1 Hour
Keeping correct records and phone
techniques.
Week #11
DBR 210 Breed Recognition 3
Hours
You will be introduced to the breeds
listed under the Hound Group in your AKC Dog Book.
DGL 210 Lab 36 Hours
Demonstration of ways to groom Mixed
Breeds and perfecting scissoring skills. Review
previous grooming.
Week #12
DGL 220 Lab and Final Test 40
Hours
Review previous grooming and perfecting
scissoring skills.

Tests will be given every Monday morning covering
information from the previous week. If you are not
available on Monday morning, you will be tested the next
day you attend school.
When local dog shows are available we will take all
students on a field trip.
Evaluation and conferences will be held every 4 weeks
upon the student or sponsors request.
